Statues, Haggis and Chas & Dave

(Also known as the week that ended on 25th January... thats a friday...)

New and exciting things afoot on Rising this week- A new feature! I called it (in a doom-laden voice) The 6 Degrees of Chas and Dave. Basically it works thus- everyone in the world can be related to everyone else in the world with 6 degrees of separation between them (ie- 6 people we're related or know). Seeing as the world of music is so blimmin incestuous, I applied that to cheeky Cockernay songsters Chas and Dave- basically, you suggest a band on the email and I get back to Chas and Dave by Friday, playing songs related to each link... it also means we get to play some C&D, who basically dont get heard enough on air, im my opinion.

Not getting it, maybe this will help- This week we started with Blur. From Blur we got to Fat Les (Alex James was in both bands. Keith Allen (of Fat Les) has a rather more famous daughter, Lily Allen. Lily Allen's godfather was Joe Strummer of the Clash, the Clash are part of a select group that have been inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, as has Jerry Lee Lewis. Jerry Lee Lewis (by all accounts) taught Dave, of Chas and Dave to play the piano. And there we have it!

Other things we were talking about included...

Statues- Well, sculptures to be specific- students from Holly Trees primary and Brentwood County High were meeting with artists over the weekend to have a bit of a brainstorming session on what the proposed sculpture at the top of Brook Street will look like
Burns Night- That was on Friday, so in case you didnt want to actually faff around cooking a massive haggis affair, the Queens Theatre in Hornchurch looked like a good bet- a live band, copoius amounts of whiskey and absolutely no offal
Shoes- Or to be specific, why girls can never have too many. Its true- we can't
Britney Spears-  And how much her new song sounds like it has chicken sound effects in it. Why Oh Why?

There was lots of other stuff obviously, but thats just a few of the highlights! Things to watch out for in the next couple of weeks is a chat with local Folk musician Steve O'Kane and I'll also be talking books with Adrian Ure, who works for all the libraries across Essex
