Body Talk -26th February

The discussion this evening was all about eyes. Mr Tony Owa from Spire Healthcare joined me to talk about eye health.

Mr Owa has many years experience, having worked initially at Moorfields.

If you have a problem with your eyes, the first port of call is either the doctor, or, more commonly, the optician, who will, if necessary, refer you to an eye specialist.

The most common complaint currently is cataracts. The procedure for cataract surgery has come on in leaps and bounds over recent years, and this has now become a simple operation where patients can normally expect to be in and out within 24 hours. One of the most effective treatments which is Mr Owa's specialist area is laser surgery to the retina at the back of the eye.

Other common complaints are macular degeneration, which is basically the eye becoming worn out, and conditions relating to diabetes. To protect your eyes, Tony recommended wearing sunglasses in bright sunlight to avoid squinting. Double benefit there as you also avoid those crows feet building up!

Also a healthy diet including plenty of fruit and veg.

Interstingly enough, Tony also said that it is possible to diagnose other irregularities in the body by looking at the condition of the iris. Iridology was covered a few months ago on the show, and it really does seem as though there's something to be said for it.
