As Always at 07.30 we did Essential Classics this week we featured The Sabre Dance by Aram Khachaturian He was a Soviet Armenian Composer whose works were often influenced by Armenian Folk Music. He was born on 6th June 1903 in the Tblisi suburb of Tiflis. He was the son of a bookbinder.His works include concertos for violin, cello and piano as well as the ballets Gayane and Spartak (also known as Spartacus from which the Sabre dance comes). Part of Gayane was used in Stanley Kubricks film 2001:A Space Odyssey. He also wrote music for film and music from Spartacus was used in the 70s as the theme for the popular BBC period drama series the Onedin Line. Since then it has become one of the most popular classic pieces with UK audiences.. Joel Cohens The Hudsucker Proxy also features music from Spartacus and Gayane and the climax of Spartacus, second movement was used in the childrens film Ice Age: The Meltdown He died on May1st 1978 What’s That Year followed at 8.30. A selection of the clues were; At the 57th Golden Globes in LA American Beauty won best picture Denzel Washington won best actor and Toy Story 2 won best picture for a musical or comedy with the best actor in this category being Jim Carrey. March saw presidential elections in Russia with victory for Vladimir Putin whilst in July Scottish National Party Leader Alex Salmond resigned Pete Sampras won the mens title at Wimbledon with Venus Williams taking the womens. In the Champions League Real Madrid beat Valencia 3 – 0 to win their 8th European cup title. In this country a week of fuel protests took place from September 7 with refineries blockaded and supply to the countrys network of petrol stations halted and as if that wasn’t enough November saw widespread flooding through England and Wales following days of heavy rain. December 13 The US Supreme Court stopped the Florida presidential recount effectively giving the state and the presidency to George W Bush Tunes Played Were Madison Avenue Don’t Call Me Baby Toploader Dancing In The Moonlight Rock DJ Robbie Williams We did the Local Papers between 8 and 9 and the nationals 9 to 10. Also I challenged Danni Tebutt to a complete Cheese Off at 9.50 by playing Guys and Dolls and ‘A Whole Lot Of Loving.
