Body Talk - 1st July

My guest this evening was Mr George Fayad, and ENT Consultant from Spire Hartswood. He was tyalking about the age old problem of snoring, and yes it's official, men do snore more than women!

Mr Fayad explained how a new group has been set up by the government to address sleep related disorders, called NICE. That stands for the National Institute for Clinical Excellence. This group aims to give guidelines to treat obstuctive sleep problems.

There are 4 stages of sleep which can be severely interrupted by snoring. When this happens there are all sorts of knock on effects, such as headaches, weight gain, extreme tiredness or high blood pressure, or a combination of these symptoms.

If you do have a snoring problem then the best advice initially is to visit your doctor. If the condition is severe, then you could be referred to a specialist who will record your sleep and snoring pattern. This is then analysed and there are various different routes back to full health. Dietary and lifestyle changes can be advised, there may be the need for a machine which encourages you to breathe correctly through the night, or it could be a simple opersation.

Whatever the cause, there is an answer to your snoring. Go and get it checked out.
