Body Talk - 29nd JulyOur topic of conversation this week was children. My guest was Dr Terry Matthews, who specialises in paediatric medicine. Terry explained that the most common conditions with children today are infectious diseases, allergies and bowel problems. There is a distinct difference betwen viral and bacterial problems. If the condition is viral it doesn't need to be treated by a doctor, this would cover things such as colds and tummy upsets. Bacterial infections are much more serious and can't be treated by over the counter medicines, these would be conditions such as pneumonia or more violent gastric upsets. Allergies can present symptoms such as asthma, skin rashes or flu like symptoms. These can sometimes be treated by over the counter medicines, but if symptoms persist, then it is always best to consult your doctor. Diet and exercise are just as important for children as adults, and whilst it may be difficult to get your children to eat the recommended five a day of fruit and veg, provided they are fit and healthy there is probably little cause for concern. Just make sure that they aren't filling up on junk food and they spend as much time as possible playing outside. If you have any questions about your childrens' health or any other health and fitness issues, then contact me at Phoenix98fm.
