Beijing Olympic Kickabout - Week one

With China heading the medal tabels on the first day of action in Beijing, we brought news from the main events including two gold medals for the host nation. Britain's Craig Fallon had missed out on a medal, eventually finishing 7th in the Judo. After some negative coverage for Team GB boxing as Frankie Gavin flew home without making a punch, Britain had a much neeed shot in the arm with news that middleweight boxer James DeGale had got his campaign off to a winning start with an impressive 13-4 victory over Egypt's Mohamed Hikal. In the pool Michael Phelps was breaking records from the very start as he stamped his authority in the heats, aiming to go back to the USA with a record 8 medals.

The weather had us beaten as far as cricket was concerned, with only 17 overs being bowled at the Oval as England's quest for a face-saving victory over South Africa in day three of the fourth test became a washout. Local cricket didn't fare much better as the rain fell for much of the afternoon.

Football kept us busy, with two of the Essex sides in League One winning - Southend beating Peterborough by a lone Peter Clarke goal (his first for the club). Leyton Orient came from behind to beat Hereford 2-1 - Adam Boyd's winning goal came from the penalty spot. Colchester didn't manage to get off to such a good start, as they went down 4-2 at Hartlepool.

Football League Two currently has Dagenham and Redbridge at the top of the league on goal difference as nearly 1500 fans watched the home side put 6 by the Chester keeper.

As always, we had the classified football results along with the round-up of the local cricket league matches and league positions. Dan Westram brought us the latest Premier League news ahead of the start of the season next weekend and a day before the Community Shield match between Portsmouth and Man United at Wembley.
