'Drive' Week Roundup 08/09/08-12/09/08

A busy week this week on 'Drive' in association with Mizu Noodle Bar, Brook Street, Brentwood.

On Thursday I was joined by local boy Callum Pretty

Callum whose 15, has been suffering from the condition, known as ME, for more than a year.

But partly thanks to his talent, Callum, of Regent Close, Rayleigh, is on the road to recovery and hoping to win through the next round of a national talent competition.

On Saturday, September 27, Callum will be singing in Brighton at a regional heat of ‘Idol 2008’ which bills itself as “the largest national talent contest outside a certain ITV show”.

The condition has not stopped him competing in many musical events like Basildon Young Musician of the year.

He came in for a chat and sang a cover version of Micheal Bubles 'Everything'.

On Friday I was joined on the phone by 13 year old Brian Mackie who is the star of the new 122 second Hovis advert which was launched on 12/09/08 on ITV1. Even myself and Brownie got the Hovis fever and attempted our own version of the classic adverts.

Brian thought he was in trouble when he was called out of class and handed a letter to take home. But instead, it was a moment that would lead to the Glaswegian boy landing the lead role in the new Hovis advert, courtesy of famous casting director, Des Hamilton, who found Thomas Thurgoose for the cult film 'This is England'

Following in the footsteps of the iconic 1973 original hovis boy, Brian will soon be one of the best known faces in Britian. He appears in every scene of the two minute commercial which charts the 122-year history of the bread company via landmarks in our national history.

Filmed in Liverpool, with a cast of over 750 extras, the ad depicts a small boy (played by Brian of course) running home with a loaf of Hovis bread through the highs and lows experienced by Britian over the last 122 years - including the suffragette movement, World War I & II, the 1953 coronation, the swinging sixties, England winning the World Cup, the 1980's miners' strike and the Millennium celebrations.

I also spoke to Ruth Shead from the British Heart Foundation on the phone about the British Heart Foundation Fund Raiser which is happening on Sunday 28th September at Eclipse Nightclub, Ongar Road.
For more information and to buy tickets you can call Debbie on 01277 260 214 or call into the British Heart Foundation Shop which is at 34a Brentwood High Street.

And I also spoke to Shaun who is one of the organisers of the Essex Country Show which was once an Essex farming family's informal gathering of half a dozen steam engines and is now the largest event of its type in the South East, with 35,000 visitors in 2007. The show, with an emphasis on agricultural history and rural crafts, is now in its 22nd year and happened over the weekend of the 13th & 14th September.

Till next week.....
