Body Talk - 12th August

Mr David Khoo from Spire Hartswood Hospital was my guest this evening. He is a General Surgeon, and he spoke to me all about the problems with gall stones.

Approximately 30% of the population over 50 have gall stones, and they are mostly women.

Gall stones can be hereditary, so watch out for symptoms if someone in your family has suffered. if you have upper tummy pain and some inflammation, perhaps feeling as though you have indigestion then it might not be just a tummy bug. Go and get it checked out, particularly if the symptoms persist.

There are two different types of stones, one caused by bile, the other cholestorol. They are both equally as uncomfortable, and start off quite small. Eventually they can grow and start to cause all sorts of other problems, including blocking the entrance to the gall bladder. If they move and travel, this can also lead to various other blockages, resulting in more serious illness.

Mr Khoo also treats many other conditions, including cancer of the stomach and oesophagus, which he says seems to be on the increase now.

To stay as fit and healthy as possible, eat healthily and get enough exercise, and if in doubt go and get it checked out.
