Body Talk - 26th August

Dr Francis Newma, Consultant Psychiatrist at Spire Hartswood Hospital joined me this evening.

His specialist area is working with older people who are suffering with anxiety and depression. He uses Cognitive Behavioural Therapy largely in his work.

The most common presenting conditios are stress, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorders and panic attacks.

Most of us can probably identify with one or two of these conditions, but we live with them. It is only when these things start to rule our lives that we need Dr Newma's expert help.

For example, a serious phobia about flying would prevent you from going abroad on hloiday. A fear of spiders could lead to not being able to step outside of the door in case a spider is lurking somewhere. Panic attacks can escalate to the stage where you are suffering severe physical symptoms to the point where you may feel like passing out.

These are all conditions that can be taken under control and allow any individual to regain their life. If left unchecked they can escalate out of all proportion.

Anxiety can lead to depression, which again is a very real and very debilitating condition. Often going unnoticed because it's not like having a cut or bruise which is immediately obvious.

If you or anyone in your family could be suffering from any of these conditions, then go and get it checked out. It could change your life.
