'Drive' - interview with Susan Lilley (Brentwood Extended Services) and Brian Darwood (Lighthouse Furniture Project) 02 October 2008

On Wednesday (02/10) I was joined by Susan Lilley from Brentwood Extended Services.

She came in to talk about 'The Parent Café' which offers a series of information sessions for parents and carers. These sessions aim to provide an insight to communicating and engaging with young people as they navigate thier way through the different stages of development.

As your child gets older, they get taught lots of different things in school, so they thought it would be great if the parents also had an opportunity to find out about these things - so that they can be as clever as or cleverer than thier children!!

They have already ran two sessions which included a workshop to help you find a healthy emotional balance when dealing with your child which they called 'Managing Those Moods' and also a session on Internet & Mobile Phone Safety which included ways to protect and monitor your child's communication whilst using modern technology.

The next skill session will be held on 8th October.

8th October 2008 - Drugs & Alcohol - An awareness workshop to advise and inform about the effects and risks of drugs & alcohol on young people.

15th October 2008 - Building Self-Esteem - Enabling parents to understand the emotional needs of children & young people.

22nd October 2008 - Walk, Drive & Ride - Instead of driving you mad, find out how to assist your child as they face the hazards ahead!

There is NO CHARGE for attending, and ran on the dates as shown between 7pm & 9pm

I was also joined by Brian Darwood from the Lighthouse Furniture Project

The Lighthouse Furniture Project is a 'Not for Profit' organisation providing good quality furniture and household items to all those who wish to use the scheme. They are able to do this by receiving and collecting furniture and other items generously given by local people.

Everyone is welcome at the project; if you are living on a low income, recieving state benefits or low income tax credits you are eligible to buy at discounted prices. You can bring proof with you or come via a referral agency e.g. Social Services, CMHT, Citizens Advice Bureau, the Council, local housing trusts or churches.

There warehouse is open for viewing and buying from Monday-Friday 9:30am-4:00pm, Saturday-9:30am to 12:30pm.

The scheme also contributes to recycling in Brentwood and surrounding districts by encouraging the re-use of furniture and domestic appliances which would otherwise have gone into landfill sites.

For futher information and to find out how you can give things, simply telephone them during office hours on 01277 222050 or check thier website

They are always in need of beds, sofas, small wardrobes, chests and electrical items which are tested prior to re-distribution
