Gardening this Week

Gardening This Week

Over the last two weeks it has been down to – 3c and as high as 14c in my garden.
This has meant the autumn colours are appearing everywhere. Generally trees and shrubs will hold their colourful leaves until we get heavy rain or high winds. So get out now whilst there is a lot of colour around.

In The Kitchen Garden

Start pruning apples and pears.
If you want an allotment this is a great time to start one as you have the whole winter to get it ready for spring plantings, although there are things you can do now. Digging is such a great way to stay fit and warm in the winter.

Plant Garlic cloves. These will continue to grow throughout the winter.

Pigeons get hungry and love brassicas, so net them. (the brassicas that is!)

In The OrnamentalGarden

Keep looking after your containers. Raise them off the ground with feet to prevent water logging.

Complete dividing and replanting perennials and grasses. Throw the middle part away as this is the weakest part of the old plant. Replant the outside parts as these are the strongest.

Plant tulips between herbaceous perennials as soils begins to show as they die down. A trowels depth should prevent mice and squirrels digging them up.

On The Lawn

Keep grass cut if mild but have mower blade set high.

Rake off leaves and compost. If you leave them it will encourage worms and worms leave worm casts which get trodden into the lawn and look unsightly.

Plant of the Week

Liquidamber styraciflua - American Sweetgum

A medium sized tree with an upright pyramidal form. Up to 20m It is native to South and East USA.
The leaves are like an Acer, palmate in shape. In the summer are a rich dark green but in the autumn turn a brilliant orange, red and purple colour! It in my opinion surpasses the maples.

Happy Gardening, see you next week.
