Body Talk - 18th November

My guest this week was Dr Honer Kader, Consultant in General Medicine and Cardiology at Spire Hartswood Hospital, he was talking about different aspects of chest pain.

This is a huge subject but we managed to cover quite a lot. The main causes of heart problems are lifestyle, smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Under 60, the male population is most at risk, over 60 it is equal between men and women. This doesn't take into account certain genetic conditions.

So the message that came through loud and clear was to take care of your health. If you take a reasonable amount of exercise, are not overweight and eat a healthy diet you are significantly reducing your risk of heart problems.

The heart is a muscle that pumps blood and oxygen around the body. Dr Kader explained that it isn't so much the heart itself that suffers, but the coronary arteries, or the tubes that lead into and out of the heart. These become furred up over the years by all or some of the above. He explained it as a pipe that becomes clogged up by debris. Eventually it is so clogged that nothing can get in or out, that is when a heart attack happens.

If caught early, there are variuos courses of treatment with tablets available. Left untreated, more serious care is needed, eventually leading to an operation.

In people over 40 routine blood tests can tell if you are likely to be at risk, so it's very important to get checked out. With any form of chest pain you should consult your doctor immediately. It doesn't always indicate a heart problem, it could be a problem in any area around the heart. The main thing is to go and get it looked at.
