Barker v McKay - Championship Boxing at the Brentwood Centre

Barker dazzles to lift title

Darren Barker being interviewed for ITV in the Phoenix FM studios

'Dazzling' Darren Barker lifted the Commonwealth middleweight title after beating Jason McKay on Saturday.

The 26-year-old from Barnet dominated throughout and it was no suprise when McKay's corner pulled him out of the fight after the bell had signalled the end of round six.

Barker showed his intentions in the first 30 seconds of the first round when catching McKay with two powerful right hands that left the 21-year-old wobbling.

Two more hard right hand blows hurt McKay in round three and it only looked a matter of time before the fight would have to be stopped.

To his credit McKay battled on, but he was clearly out of his depth and his corner decided enough was enough after round six.

Barker told ITV4 afterwards: "At the end of that round [three] I knew it would only take a couple more.

"It is another win and the end of a good year."

Promoter Mick Hennessy said: "He's got the potential to be the best middleweight in the world.

"We'll be looking for him to be European Champion next year."
