Body Talk - 6th January

My guest this week was Gary Dunnell, MRI Lead Radiographer at Spire Hartswood Hospital.

German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen discovered X-rays in 1895 and received the Nobel prize for physics in 1901. His achievement heralded the age of modern physics and transformed medical practice. In 1967, the first magnetic resonance scan took place at Nottingham University Hospital. Advances in computer and magnetic technology mean that today MRI is the preferred imaging method for most parts of the body. It is completely safe and can be used by almost anyone.  And no it isn't true that the scanner will extract your fillings. The only exclusions are people with pace makers or who have had a certain type of brain surgery.

When you have a scan you remain fully clothed, removing only metal items. It can be a very relaxing experience, as music is played while the scan takes place. You can even take your favourite music with you. The introduction of MRI scanning has reduced the amount of investigative surgery drastically.

Spire Hartswood now have their own scanner on site. It will have it's grand unveiling next week and this means that the hospital will be able to offer a much speedier scanning service for all of their patients.
