Mr Ramachandran Ravi, Consultant Urologist from Spire Hartswood Hospital

The guest on Body Talk on Tuesday the 3rd February was Mr Ramachandran Ravi, consultant urologist from Spire Hartswood Hospital. He was talking about cystitis - which affects about 15% of women every year. Mr Ravi explained why certain women are vulnerable, what you can do if you get an attack and how you can try to avoid repeat infections. Mr Ravi also spoke about the implications for men and women of blood in the urine - which may be an early indication of urinary tract cancer or kidney stones.

1.  URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS  (UTIs) IN WOMEN

UTIs are the second most common infections  that GPs see and they cause considerable anxiety in women. Cystitis is infection of the lower urinary tract and causes frequency, urgency, haematuria and pain in the lower abdomen. Upper urinary tract infection (pyelonephritis) is suggested by the presence of fever, flank pain, nausea and vomiting. UTIs affect 15% of women each year and up to 25% of women will experience a recurrence.

 2.  HAEMATURIA

Haematuria or blood in the urine can be visible or non-visible and may be the only presenting sign of significant urologic disease  such as urinary tract cancer  and  kidney stones. Investigations include urine analysis, ultrasound scan,  intravenous urography, CT scan and cystoscopy (inspection of the bladder with a telescope).
