Dr Etayeb Marouf, Consultant Endocrinologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital

This weeks guest on Body Talk is Dr Etayeb Marouf, consultant endocrinologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital, he'd previously talked to us about diabetes and returned to talk about thyroid disease.

The thyroid gland, which is in the neck, produces a hormone, thyroxine, which controls metabolism – in other words, the rate at which the body uses up energy. The thyroid gland may become overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism).

About 4 per cent of women and 0.2 per cent of men have an overactive or underactive thyroid and need medical treatment to regulate this. Dr Marouf explained the symptoms and treatments and how he helps patients manage their disease.

Some of the questions answered by Dr Marouf were:

What is an endocrinologist?

Why does the thyroid become over-active or under-active in some people?

Is it hereditary?

What treatment can be offered?

Is it life-long?

What extra support is available to sufferers?

One of the points of contact for sufferers is the British Thyroid Foundation, you can find out more about them here; www.btf-thyroid.org

Tune in every Tuesday at 7pm for more from Bodytalk in association with Spire Hartswood Hospital
