Benjamin Grosvenor - International Concert Pianist

This week on Monday Classics, we had the chance to meet Benjamin Grosvenor. From Essex, at 17 years old, Benjamin is widely regarded as one of the most gifted pianists in the world, having won the Keyboard round of the 2004 BBC Young Musician of the Year.

Benjamin explained how he really 'got into' playing the piano when he saw his friends becoming musicians, and knew he could do it better! And the story continued with him being offered solo and concerto recitals in London and elsewhere in the UK with major orchestras in top venues.

Alongside his higher education studies at the Royal Academy of Music (he is two years ahead of the game), he is about to undertake a world tour in the 2009-2010 season, he is releasing his debut CD 'This & That' any moment now, and will play at four essex venues in September - details below. Benjamin is also to record some works by Frederic Chopin as part of a box set for EMI to be released in the new year. Watch this space...

Benjamin talked of the journey so far, how he learns the notes, what he 'does' with them, and a little of the life of a travelling musician. All in all, a fascinating hour.

You can hear Benjamin in September at these places:

16th September: Chelmsford Civic Theatre

18th September: Epsom Playhouse

20th September: Brentwood Theatre

25th September: Maidstone Hazlitt Arts Centre

During Monday Classics we heard 4 tracks from Benjamin's CD:

Concert Study No 3 (Toccatina) - Nikolai Kapustin

Nocturne in D flat Op27 No.2 - Frederic Chopin

Hungarian Dance No 5 - Johannes Brahms/Cziffra

Love Walked In - GeorgeGershwin/Percy Grainger

Details of the CD and of all Benjamin's concerts may be found on his website: www.benjamingrosvenor.co.uk
