Bra-vissima!

On Monday Classics on 31st August, we welcomed Julia Wilson James to the studio to talk to us about one of her many projects; Bra-vissima - the Ladies Choir based at Brentwood Cathedral.

Bra-vissima held their first concert of the season at Brentwood Cathedral last week, and Julia explained how this ladies choir sings in several parts spanning almost 3 octaves of sound! Quite unusual, as was their concert; featuring a whole host of new compositions, written by resident Brentwood Cathedral Music Staff; Andrew Wright, Stephen King and James Devor.

Julia will be back on Phoenix FM with news of their next performances, so watch this space, and stay tuned to Monday Classics for more.

The playlist went like this:

The Non-Classical Classic had a night off (it was Bank Holiday, I had also presented Drive that day so we had already had 4 hours of non-classical classics (!) and our guest needed to hot-foot it to the Cathedral for a 7.30 rehearsal...

A programme of choral music, in the historic Priory Church of St Laurence, Blackmore.
The programme will include performances of two contrasting Requiems – one by Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria in 1583, and the other by English composer Herbert Howells. The Howells piece was composed in 1936, but only published much later. In fact, the Stondon Singers were the first amateur choir to perform the work, from manuscript, prior to its publication in 1980.
