The Breakfast Show - Peter Jefferson, Chairman of The Friends Of Wallace Kennels

Photobucket

On the show this morning I spoke to Peter Jefferson, Chairman of the Friends of Wallace Kennels, which is located at Clapgate, Stondon Massey, Essex. It was established some 34 years ago initially as a boarding kennels with a single block being allocated for unwanted dogs. Over time it became obvious that there was a severe problem finding a place of refuge for the stray, unwanted and abandoned animals of Brentwood and the surrounding areas. About 26 years ago Vera Robinson (MBE) decided to turn the Kennels into a sanctuary and rescue centre for all animals in need, including wildlife, with dogs being the major concern.

Today the catchment area covers some 500 square miles with dog wardens from Brentwood, Chelmsford and Maldon Councils bringing in dogs on an almost daily basis from those areas. They have also helped Dagenham, Colchester and parts of Suffolk. The Authorities generally pay for one weeks board per dog thereafter, apart from any rehoming fees, it is left to public donations and the volunteers of the registered charity ‘Friends of Wallace Kennels’ to fund the ongoing expenses of shelter, food, veterinary bills, bedding, heating and light etc. The kennels does not benefit in any way from the dog seizure fee levied on owners when their dog is allowed to stray.

Peter told us about some fundraising events they have coming up including the Sponsored Dog Walk, which is at Thorndon Country Park (North), this Sunday (20th) from 10 am.
Other fundraising events in the near future include:

26th September
Jumble Sale, Doddinghurst Village Hall, 10am to 12pm

2nd October
An Evening of Clairvoyance, with Jeremy Mullins and Sandy Wilkinson. 7.45 pm, Brentwood School Sports Centre, Middleton Hall Lane, CM15 8EE.

24th October
Jumble Sale, Doddinghurst Village Hall, 10am to 12pm

28th November
Jumble Sale & Christmas Bazaar (11.00 am start) Doddinghurst Village Hall

28th November
Brentwood Xmas Lights, High Street, Brentwood

With the cost of overheads rising and with so many deserving charities chasing limited donation funds, the Friends would be very grateful to receive any cash donation, however large or small. Please contact thier Treasurer on 01277 821044 or check the website www.friendsofwallacekennels.co.uk
