Fireworks and Man's Best Friend!

With Holloween and Guy Fawkes upon us I asked Kat Rhodes of Spring Lodge Vets to join me and offer helpful advice to pet owners during these celebrations.

Many pets become very scared of sudden loud bangs and any unusually loud noises. This can develop into a full -blown phobia, often most apparent in response to the sounds of fireworks. Dogs in particular might tremble pitifully, while trying to hide somewhere safe, some even try chewing through doors in an attempt to escape.

Cats often sit wide eyed and terrifified not knowing what to do or where to go.

Kat Rhodes is head of surgery at Spring lodge vets and is all to familiar with the symptoms our little friends face.

Her advice is to first keep your pet safe inside, close doors and windows to keep noise and flash of light out as much as possible. Try to stay with your pet and be as calm and relaxed yourself since our pets can sense our emotions they too will pick up on this and react accordingly.

Never show anger toward your pet or tell them off for barking, it doesn't help the situation at all, nor does making more of the situation by over comforting. It is ok to pet for calming purposes but don't over due. The little you make of the situation the better.

Only in extreme circumstances is it reccommended to medicate your pet with tranquilisers and only do so with the advice and guidance of your vet. Also, check with your vet for alternative natural remedies you may be considering first.

Kat Rhodes will be a regular guest with different  topics each visit, she is open to your questions and will return again a couple of weeks time. A date will be announced on our Phoenix 98 Fm website.
