Police advice for neighborhood watch and Burglary

Sergeant Sue Richardson was in the studio today to offer advice and answer your questions on this week’s topic of Burglaries and how to keep your home safe during the holiday season. Many times leaving Christmas presents wrapped under the tree weeks before Christmas morning is an invitation to have your home broken into.

Sergeant Richardson advises that we hold off putting our presents on display until Christmas morning to ensure safety and unnecessary theft. Below is a guide as to how to make it tougher on thieves at Christmas time.

Police are warning residents who have uPVC door to not only lock the door with a key but to make sure you push the handle up to engage the locking mechanism. Upon investigation a number of burglaries could have been prevented had they locked their uPVC doors properly.

So if you have a UPVC door – make sure you follow the three simply rules:

  1. Shut the door
  2. Push the handle up to engage the locking mechanism
  3. Lock the door with the key

Failure to lock the door properly with the key could make you more vulnerable to burglars!

Take time to consider the location of your keys and valuables:

Ensure that keys are not within reach through the letterbox

Keep your vehicle keys, house keys, wallets, mobile phones and handbags in a safe location that is not easily sort after by burglars if they do get in.

When you go away do not leave your keys outside your home in an obvious place

If you want further advice on how to avoid becoming the victim of crime contact our crime reduction officer on 01277 223639 or a member of your Neighbourhood Policing Team on 0300 333 4444 ext 75106
