Brentwood Choral Society

Robin Derbyshire joined me for the show on Monday 25th January to let us know how we can get involved with singing in our local choral society, particularly this coming Saturday at their Annual Choral Workshop event at the Brentwood Preparatory School.

Just 201 years after Haydn’s death Brentwood Choral Society and Brentwood Cathedral Singers with are performing two of his works The Creation on 15 May and the Harmonie Mass on 20 March, both in the Cathedral.  In preparation for these concerts the Workshop will focus on the choruses from The Creation, followed by an exploration of the Mass. Anyone attending the Workshop is warmly invited to participate in the concerts.

The afternoon will be led by Andrew Wright, Director of Music at Brentwood Cathedral, and Nicholas Sherwood, Musical Director of the Choral Society.

As in previous years an invitation is extended to choral singers of all ages and voices and we hope for an enjoyable and productive afternoon. For a small fee of £5, free for students, you will be welcomed and provided with light refreshments and the use of music.  Registration takes place from 2pm, and there is ample car parking at the school via Nuffield Hospital entrance, Shenfield Road.

It was Burns night too, and the music had a Scottish theme, starting with Hue and Cry's Looking for Linda as the Non-Classical Classic and including 'Ye Banks and Braes' and Highland Cathedral, as performed by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. I also played you music from Haydn's Creation which the Brentwood Choral Society will be performing later in the year. An English classic too, from Ralph Vaughan Williams took us towards 8pm, all rounded off by Hayley Westenra.

Join me from 7pm next Monday when we will be chatting to David Worsfold from Brentwood Cathedral's Music Department. He is co-directing the Cathedral's performance of Benjamin Britten's Noye's Fludde in March, and he will be in the Monday Classics studio to tell us all about that.

And, here is the rest of the Phoenix FM Classic Events Guide. Take care, see you soon. Ed
