Body Talk - 16th February

My guest this evening was Miss Helen Tebbutt, one of the consultant gynaecologists at Spire Hartswood Hospital.

Helen was talking about menstrual problems, what's normal and what isn't. In the past women have very much suffered in silence, but at last now women are feeling that this isn't the embarassing issue that it used to be.

Heavy periods can often be preceded by days of discomfort. Stomach ache, headache and generally feeling unwell. When the period starts the flow can be exceptionally heavy, with the lady nmeeding to change evrey hour or so. This can be very distressing. A visit to the doctor can get you a referral to Helen, who will advise you on the best course of action to take.

A change in lifestyle might be advised for those who don't exercise regularly, or a course of drug treatment. It is usually only in very severe cases that a hysterectomy would be advised.

Spire Hartswood is putting on two womens health evenings in March. They are free and will be taking place on the 3rd and 11th. Helen will be there talking about menstrual problems and three of her colleagues will be there also. Other topics will include breast health, cervical cancer and the dreaded pelvic floor exercises. Both evenings are free but you do need to book. Contact Spire Hartswood for more details.
