Drive last week 8th - 12th

Spoke last week on Drive to Malcom Burgess from local publishers Oxygen who are behind new book "Dublin" which is the 4th of their series looking at cities around Europe and, indeed, the world. It features 50 different writers who've all written something about the city. The launch was at Brentwood LIbrary for the "city-lit" evening on Dublin this week as part of the Essex book festival, and if you want to find out more visit www.essexbookfestival.org.uk. The books sound great, the kind of thing you can dip in and out of and if you struggle to start, let alone finish a book, or you keep putting a book down when your mind starts wandering (guilty) or only get a few pages done before you fall asleep at night (er.. guilty again) or it takes you some years to get a book finished (er... yes again), it sounds a great way to get into reading as well, by reading little bits here and there to give you a flavour of some of these authors, and, indeed the city - little bite-size stories you can dip in and out of time if you haven't got the time (who has these days?!). I think, personally, I have about twenty different books on the "go" at the moment, many from years ago. I also remember the old phrase from Nick Horny remembering a respected author who said he would regularly go out and buy books and his shelves were full of brilliant looking books he had never read." "That's just like me" he excitedly thought. "And indeed you! I do that all the time. Reader, we're in respected company". Or something like that, I paraphrase slightly. Anyway do check out the other books in the series, Paris, Berlin and Madrid (I think) - city-pick Dublin the new one.

Also reminisced with Oasiz the Oasis tribute band playing in Southend last week about the music of Oasis - really interesting stuff talking about just what an impact Oasis made and how many great songs they've come up with, and just what the music means to an entire generation who have now grown up (in some cases) and want to see some nostalgia - with the real thing no longer around, they're playing at the Forge in Billericay tomorrow night I believe (Fri) - if not they're also playing at venues in Essex in the near future so they'll be playing somewhere near you - check out www.oasiz.moonfruit.com for more details.

And I spoke to Daniella from Brentwood from the group Uni5 who were one of the Eurovision hopefuls trying to be picked on BBC1 on Friday night to be the UK's representative in Oslo later this year for the Eurovision Song Contest. She sounded great to speak to and told me about her memories of dancing to Gina G many years ago when she first remembered watching Eurovision. (Gosh, I remember Kenny Logan and the like...) She didn't get through to the final 3, although another Essex singer Josh from Basildon got through - wahey! We'll have to speak to him on Phoenix sometime. Whisper it though - I don't think the song is that great.....

..so we should walk it! Ha ha! No, only the gods know how Eurovision voters vote - certainly the verses sound better than the chorus - it's called "That sounds good to me" - ....although thank goodness the "experts" now also have a say in the vote I believe, rather than just leaving it to the general public (who have seemed to have simply voted for their neighbours over the years - and not us). Good luck anyway to young Josh who can at least belt it out in Norway.

The headline hits last week were!

Monday - Green "UFO" spotted near Norfolk windmill - Somebody's watching me Rockwell - Girl from Mars - Ash
