Friday 26th March - That Fffriday Feeling

GUEST

Rachel Collins and her band have reached the Live and Unsigned Regional final at the Beck Theatre, Hayes on Sunday 28th March, from 5.50pm. Tickets are £7.50 and available from www.liveandunsigned.uk.com and for more gigs and all the info go to www.rachelcollins.co.uk

I spoke with Cllr Lucas this morning who is the Cabinet Member for Heritage, Culture & the Arts about the funding available through the Life Raft Trust which supports art, and leisure activities in Essex that have suffered a the hand of the recession. There is a pot of £1M available but that pot of money is a one off. The next round of roadshows take place between April and June with assessments taking place in the Autumn. The trust was able to support Brentwood Theatre and their extension which has transformed the Theatre creating a versatile space that can be used for a wide variety of activities.

Evening Echo

  • STRIKE ACTION TO HALT TRAINS FOR 4 DAYS - RAIL workers are to strike on the four days after Easter. Talks between Network Rail and the RMT and TSSA unions failed to resolve a dispute over jobs and working practices. TSSA supervisors and RMT maintenance workers will walk out from 6-9 April, while RMT signal staff will strike from 0600-1000 and 1800-2200 the same dates. Network Rail has said most services would be cancelled.
  • CLARE HORGAN, A NURSE who lost her brother to cancer then beat the disease herself is set to scale the highest peak in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro. The 45-year-old will be trekking up the 19,341ft mountain in memory of her brother, Vincent, who died of cancer at the age of 45. Clare, a Marie Curie nurse, will be joining an organised climb of the peak in October in aid of the charity. The money Clare raises, which she hopes will be £4,000, will help support the Marie Curie Essex Nursing Appeal. Clare, who nurses in the Basildon and Brentwood areas, has always wanted to travel to Africa. Clare has taken part in several fundraising events since becoming a Marie Curie nurse, including running the London Marathon last year and walking the 87 mile length of historic Hadrian’s Wall. Visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/essex for more information about the Kilimanjaro trek. l If you would like to sponsor Clare visit her just giving site at www.justgiving.com/Clare-Horgan
  • HUNDREDS of terminally-ill cancer patients in south Essex are not claiming benefits they are entitled to, according to a new report. Nearly 500 people who died in 2007 left behind an estimated £829,000 in disability living allowance and attendance allowance. That means each of them lost out on automatic state benefits of about £1,700. The figures come from a new report by Macmillan Cancer Support, and are based on the latest available mortality rates and unclaimed benefits data. The charity says £90.8million went unclaimed nationwide during 2007. A long and confusing process for claimants, people not knowing they are eligible, and the stigma of claiming benefits have been blamed for the low take-up. If you have any queries pop along to the drop-in centre at St Luke’s House, 22 Lampits Hill, Corringham, which opens from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. Its a free service, run in partnership with the Macmillan Welfare Benefits Advice team. Call 01375 648170 for details. Macmillan has also launched a service at www.macmillan.org.uk/benefitsmadeclear
