Evening Echo
  • THE use of wild animals in circuses looks set to be outlawed after the results of a public consultation published at the weekend revealed overwhelming backing for a ban. 94 per cent of the thousands of people who responded said they wanted a total ban on the use of lions and tigers and even more, 95.5 per cent, did not think there was any species of wild animal which could acceptably be used in circuses. The Great British Circus was at the centre of controversy when it visited Essex last July over its use of three captive elephants and a tiger that were kept in cramped conditions. Despite protests, the circus continued its Essex tour, appearing in Colchester, Chelmsford and Thurrock.
  • STAFF at two health trusts in mid Essex have been having their say on working conditions in a survey that was carried out by the Care Quality Commission last year. Philippa Lowe, director of finance and resources, said there was a mixed bag of results. She said once the results had been analysed, an action plan would be drawn up to deal with issues. -executive director Stewart Wallace said informal meetings should take place between staff and directors

Departed: Brian Statham
“I would like to thank them both for their efforts whilst with us. They worked hard and made decisions which they believed were right for the club. I wish them well for the future, as they wish the same for us.
“As a club, we move on. I have asked our reserve team manager, John Mifsud, to step in and take the remaining games.
“For those of you who are not familiar with John, he has been with us for six years, he has a good eye for a player and has built many successful winning youth sides. As well as being reserve team manager John also oversees the U18s and U16s.
“Young players like Rob Swaine, Dale Brightly, Wayne Semanshia and Harrison Chatting have all come through the ranks with John, so I have no concerns about his ability to look after and manage our side in these remaining games.
“I ask that all the supporters on the terraces get wholeheartedly behind our team, your support means a lot the lads on the pitch and I’m sure they will respond positively with your help.”
