Thursday 8th April Feature Films and Future Stars

GUEST: Brad Watson Writer and Director   - Beacon 77

Brad began his career in film and TV as a camera assistant, then as an assistant editor in the cutting rooms of Pinewood, Shepperton and London.  In 2004 Brad co-founded Revolt Films and directed the horror/comedy feature film, ASYLUM NIGHT, which won the Tromafling award for ‘Best UK Feature’ at the Edinburgh Festival.

Between 2004 and 2007, Brad directed and produced several award winning short films and music videos, plus fulfilling the roll of digital FX supervisor and music composer on most. In 2007 he directed a hard hitting 2 part educational drama about knife crime, HURTING FROM THE INSIDE, to much acclaim.
Brad is also co writer and co director of DIFFERENT SHADES OF GRAHAM, a feature film in development that won its production budget through The Big Pitch with Moxie Makers and Ipso Facto Films.
Brad’s practical knowledge of every aspect of film production and inventive ability to mix old school tricks with cutting edge technology enabled him to achieve his ambitious vision of BEACON77.
Two young women arrive at a curious penthouse apartment, led by one’s crush on her tutor. However, her love interest doesn’t live alone. He’s part of a trio of computer hackers about to embark on the ultimate job on the world’s most mysterious mainframe. Whilst doing so, they unlock more than they bargain for with supernatural and ultimately fatal results.
Can this seemingly insignificant chain of events, which have thrown this group together, be construed as fate? Can the beacon provide a signal of hope or is it a web of manipulation, paranoia and ultimately... murder?
At present, we are confirmed a cinema release in the UK for August.  The film has so far gained distribution in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, France, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Belgium, Russia and some Satellite countries.  We shot it at 3 Mills studio in London but we did do some location shooting in Southend and Billericay.   The movie was edited at my studio in Barleylands Farm in Billericay and over 220 visual FX shots were completed there too.

  • SAINSBURY’S has underwritten half of the £6million Southend United must pay as part of a legal agreement for building its new stadium at Fossetts Farm.   In a report to a special meeting of Southend Council’s development control committee, the Blues and Sainsbury’s are asking for more time to pay some of the £6million towards town centre regeneration, a condition of planning permission. £3m will be guaranteed by Sainsbury’s and this will be paid by 2012.   The other £3m will be paid either five years after the completion of Fossetts Farm retail park or the completion of the redevelopment of the London Road Sainsbury’s site, whichever happens sooner.  If the council agrees the change to the payments at a special meeting on April 13, officers have been assured the remaining issues with the redevelopment of Roots Hall in particular buyin nearby Prospects College site will be “speedily pursued”.   The Blues are in the High Court the day after the meeting to face another winding up order over unpaid tax debts of £410,000.
  • Basildon is the first stop of an Essex-wide roadshow touring the county in a bid to beat Burglary.   Over the next eight weeks every policing district in Essex is set to be visited by the Burglary Focus roadshow.  The roadshow will kick off this week in Basildon town centre on Friday. The event forms part of Essex Police’s crackdown on burglary, codenamed Operation Hornet, which aims to stamp out the crime across the county.

  • The county’s Chief Constable has ordered a review of the way Essex Police carry out their investigations. Jim Barker-McCardle is so keen for his force to be one step ahead of the criminals he has made an internal review his top priority, after taking on the job in September. A team of six experienced officers started work on the review today, going into the five divisions which cover the county, and working with their commanders. Detectives would not be asked to choose to specialise in dealing with a particular type of crime, he said, nor would detectives be centralised into a single, county-wide unit. Training and motivating officers is a key part of the Chief Constable’s plans.
