Monday 12th April - What a weekend!!

I won the sweepstake at work for the second year running - but I don't think they will let me play next year!

GUEST : DCFO Gordon HUNTER

DCFO Gordon Hunter is organising the charity event to raise funds for Help for Heroes and our own Firefighters Charity and wants all stations to support the event, either on St George’s Day itself – April 23 – or the Saturday that follows.

He’ll be out with the rest of SMB with their own buckets and sponges at Kelvedon Park on April 23, so if your car needs a special shine, drive over for a wash. So, if you plan to take part, please register your interest with chloe.rowling@essex-fire.gov.uk.

“There’s always a feeling of patriotism around St George's Day, so I wanted to do something to tap into that and bring to everyone’s attention the tremendous work being done by our men and women overseas serving with the armed forces. As a service we’ve always had strong links with the armed forces and this is just an enjoyable way of demonstrating our support,” said DCFO Hunter. “We’re hoping stations will be able to provide their own buckets, sponges and leathers, but if you’re having difficulty, contact Media for support.”

GUEST:
Ed Bowsher from Lovemoney.com spoke this morning about keeping a track on your finances and getting the best price for insurance, groceries, phone, gas and electric. Top tips include checking your bank statement each month and make sure you aren't paying for any unwanted subscriptions. Good News from the budget is that for first time buyers there is no Stamp duty for properties under £250.000! but petrol prices will be increasing by at least another 3p between now and the beginning of next year! LOCAL HEADLINES:

Evening Echo
  • A NINE year-old boy was saved from drowning by firefighters who wrenched him free from sticky mud at the estuary, in Wat Tyler Country Park, off Pitsea Hall Lane in Basildon. A firecrew balanced a rescue ladder around four meters over the mud to where the boy was stuck. One of the firefighters and a park ranger tied themselves to the ladder and they together managed to wrench him free, shortly after 3pm Sunday afternoon. For the full story see Today's Echo
  • THE father of former England captain John Terry is due to appear in a Basildon court on a drugs charge. Ted Terry, 55, from Chafford Hundred, is due before magistrates in Basildon magistrates on May 13. The father of the controversial centre back, who is still captain of Chelsea Football Club, was questioned by police in February and released on bail. He was since re-interviewed and has now been charged with supply of a class A drug.
  • ESSEX motorists are facing testing times as the price of fuel hit an all time high with average petrol prices hitting 120p a litre, eclipsing the previous peak of 119.7 in July 2008. The RAC says it comes just days after the 1p a litre fuel duty rise on April 1 and with oil prices increasing, the future looks bleak for motorists. The increase has been put down to the weak pound, the increase in the wholesale price of fuel and the tax rises since December 2008 adding around 10p to the cost of a litre of fuel. As well as motorists battling the rise, emergency services are also feeling the effects of the increase as they try to keep their vehicles on the road. The East of England Ambulance Service, which covers Essex, said the price of fuel had been taken into consideration in its annual budget, but admitted it would have an impact on future budgets if petrol prices continued to rise. Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said it had fuel reserves to call on if needed. Essex Police said they would not be affected by the increase, but warned motorists and petrol stations to be vigilant over the theft of fuel.
