What to do in the garden this week.......

In The Flower Garden

  • Tie in young delphinium growth to plant supports
  • Sow seeds of hardy annual flowers directly into beds where you would like them to bloom
  • Start to regularly spray roses that are vulnerable to disease
  • Lift and divide clumps of hemerocallis
  • Secure emerging clematis shoots to supports, taking care not to snap their fragile stems

In The Fruit and Vegatable Garden

  • Plant herbs in decorative pots, and keep close to the house so you can reach them easily
  • Pull up soil around the developing shoots of early potatoes
  • Start sowing salad crops at regular 3-4 week intervals to ensure a regular supply for picking
  • Trim leggy rosemary bushes to promote bushy new growth
  • Sow seeds of the following crops this week if conditions are fine: lettuce and salad leaves, spinach, radish, rocket, watercress, mizuna, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts

In The Greenhouse

  • Prick out petunia seedlings once they've developed two true leaves
  • Sow French and runner beans in pots
  • Put up greenhouse shade netting if the sun is out and conditions are hot
  • Plant up hanging baskets and patio pots with summer bedding
  • Buy young plants of agapanthus, nerines and tulbaghia to grow in pots for summer colour
  • Check plants regularly for signs of pests
  • Hang yellow sticky traps among plants to catch whitefly and other flying pests

Around The Garden

  • Mow lawns regularly, gradually lowering the height of the cut as spring progresses
  • Treat problem weeds, such as nettles and brambles, with weedkiller
  • Tidy up hedges, but before you start cutting make sure no birds are nesting in them
  • Keep large sheets of fleece handy to protect plants if frost is forecast
  • Build log piles at the back of borders for wildlife to shelter in
  • Rake out dead grass from lawns
