  • A WOMAN who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 44 is launching a new advice group to help others. Diana Burton, 57, of Lindon Road, Wickford, had her world turned upside down by the diagnosis. She had to give up her job as a midwife and was left struggling to look after two young children. After a series of major operations, she started a local awareness group, because health professionals told her it was a service the area desperately needed. The new Billericay and District Parkinson’s UK Support Group, meets on the third Saturday of every month at Christ Church, in Perry Street, Billericay, and after five years, has 122 members. For details of the group, call Mrs Burton on 01268 676053
  • HIGHWAYS chiefs have been told to direct more cash into repairing pothole scarred roads in Billericay. Essex County Council has just announced it spent nearly £3million on scheduled repairs last month to roads across the county. Among those resurfaced in Billericay were Kennel Lane, Kings Way and Haven Rise. However there are still dangerous potholes on Perry Street, Stock Road and Grange Road. The county council’s highways department, said the highways teams remained committed to repairing damage caused by the worst winter weather for 30 years and residents can report a problem with the state of a road by calling 0845 6037631.
  • THE critically-acclaimed documentary movie about legendary Canvey r’n’b band Dr Feelgood is returning to south Essex. Oil City Confidential will be screened for another week at the Movie Starr cinema, off Eastern Esplanade, Canvey, starting May 7, which would have been the 58th birthday of frontman, the late Lee Brilleaux’s. It is also being shown during the Southend Film Festival at the Palace Theatre, in London Road, Westcliff, on April 30. Oil City Confidential charts the band’s rise to fame in the Seventies through live footage and interviews with band members, including archive film of Brilleaux, who lost a battle with cancer in 1994. The movie sold out at cinemas in Canvey, Southend and Basildon, during a limited run of screenings in February.
