Monday 19th April - What Happened to the Weekend!

What a weekend, I don't feel like my feet have touched the floor, and it is already Monday Morning! Hey ho on with the show as they say :-)

Evening Echo

  • A THRILL-SEEKING primary school teacher has started giving mountainboarding lessons – in a south Essex park. PE teacher Steve Bickerton, 45, is keen to spread the word about the fledgling sport, which he says combines the adrenalin-pumping joys of skateboarding and snowboarding. He will be offering lessons at weekends and throughout the school holidays until the end of October, on the hills of Gloucester Park, in Basildon. Mr Bickerton of Belstedes, Basildon, held his first lessons in Gloucester Park last week. He can supply the boards, helmets and other safety equipment. To find out more, call 08456 436720.
  • GROUP of budding film-makers have transformed a play written by a severely disabled man into a film. The sixth-formers from Brentwood School were so inspired by Ben Adams’ play, My Beirut, which he wrote with the help of his carers, they decided to turn it into a film and raise money for charity to boot. Mr Adams, who lives in Stock, suffers from a rare genetic disease called spinocerebellar degeneration, which means he is unable to walk, talk, move or communicate in any way apart from eye movements and limited hand movements. His carers talk to him by passing his hand over a keyboard and waiting for him to signal which letter he means by squeezing his thumb. Through this method he composed My Beirut, which is about his personal suffering as well as wider issues such as freedom, human rights and abuse. Ben’s story came to the attention of Brentwood student Ryan Barrell through his sister, who used to be one of Ben’s carers. Ryan, who is very involved with community service at school, was so struck with My Beirut, he teamed up with another volunteer, Samuel Haskell, and set about turning the play into a screenplay. Auditions were held, footage shot and the editing got underway. Now the film is ready to be seen and the premiere will be held on Saturday, April 24, at the school. It costs £10 for adults, £5 for adults, and all money raised will go to Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, in London.
To buy a ticket, call Sam on 07814 248858 or Ryan on 07795 966935.

A second half own goal saw Brentwood beaten in a disappointing end-of-season game at Oakfield on Saturday. Brentwood failed to create enough chances to deserve anything out of the game and the hosts were worth the win that extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

Last two Ryman League fixtures of 2009/10 season:-

Tuesday 20 April – Lowestoft Town (Home) kick off 7.45pm

Saturday 24 April – Maldon Town (Home) kick off 3pm
