70's Rock Show - 11th May 2010

The rock blasted into our ears from the start this week, with a scream from The Sweet – loving that glam rock! A couple of songs turned down by The Sweet we followed by the British Rock heart-throb that is David Essex, then we danced to a series of double-entendre stuff, just for fun :-)

We had a bit of ‘scary’ music about werewolves (on which Mick Fleetwood & John McVie played) & we kept a horror movie connection going with “Castle Walls”. This is said to have influenced the music in “Hallowe’en”, although it was apparently based on Tubular Bells, which featured in “The Exorcist” of course. From Styx’s 7th album, which was released on 07/07/77 – lucky it wasn’t their sixth album a year earlier!

It seems incredible that it’s 18 years since George Michael performed “Somebody To Love” at the Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert with the surviving members of Queen, but it was April 1992. George did a great job, but Freddie is still the best.

We featured the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, but only as support to the awesome Rainbow & we ventured further into guitar heaven, with #97 on the all-time rock top 100 guitar solos list (Judas Priest), but we did even better with #40 from Steely Dan (more top 100 in the coming weeks). We stayed with American rock at the end, moving from The Doobies to the ZZees & then finishing with the magnificent Wishbone Ash.

Listen in next week, when there’s so much more to come…
