Body Talk - 30th March 2010

My guest this evening was Mr James Kellerman, Consultant Neurosurgeon and spinal specialist.

There are many causes of back and neck pain. The most obvious cause is bad posture. Repeatedly sitting or standing awkwardly can cause major back problems. The first thing to look at is your lifestyle. How much exercise do you get? Many problems can be corrected by a regular exercise programme. Gentle movements such as yoga or pilates can be excellent in alleviating back pain. Spinal surgery is only used as a last resort or if there is severe damage due to injuries or genetic problems.

Mr Kellerman also spoke out about whiplash injuries, or Miss Whiplash as he fondly calls it. There is often no depth  or serious long term damaged caused by whiplash. It may be that it has emphasised an existing injury. It is just as hard to prove as disprove and has almost become an easy source of income from insurance companies as a result of car accidents. This condition is definately a product of the 20th Century.

If you have any worries over back pain the first port of call is your gp. Go and get it checked out. There may be a simple solution to your long term pain, if not, then Mr Kellerman will be on hand to investigate further.
