Body Talk - 27th April 2010

My guest this evening was Miss Asha Sharma, Consultant Gynaecologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital. Asha was talking about pelvic pain, which is one of the most common reasons that women seek gynaecological advice. Surprisingly men aren't immune to pelvic pain, although it's much more common in women. Asha explained how this condition is investigated and treated.

Most women tend to put up with the pain, associating it with periods and often thinking that it is normal to be totally debilitated for a few days each month. Another reason for not seeking help is quite  simply embarassment. If this applies to you then don't be afraid to ask for help. Asha will be only too pleased to offer advice and point you in the right direction to alleviate your suffering.

If the pain is prolonged or continual then the best advice is to consult your gp, who can then refer you to a specialist such as Asha. The treatments available very rarely these days need to resort to surgery. It is often succesfully treated with a course of medication.

Very important to remember you pelvic floor exercises. If you are unsure about how to exercise it would be a good idea to consult a health specialist such as a yoga teacher  or physio who should be able to advise you on a good exercise programme.
