Body Talk - 25th May 2010

My guest this week was Mr Anil Vohra, consultant urologist at Spire Hartswood Hospital. He was talking about overactive blader syndrome, also known as nervous bladder. About  1 in 6 adults report some symptoms of an overactive bladder and a third of these people have episodes of urge incontinence.

Overactive bladder is the uncontrollable urge to urinate, as opposed to stress incontinence which can happen if you cough or sneeze. It can rule your life it goes untreated with many people afraid to go out without making sure of the location of every toilet. One of the causes is drinking too much tea or coffee during the day. It is important to have a good fluid intake, but too much can have an adverse effect.

There are many treatments available, including the new neuro-modulation treatment, and, surprisingly, botox injections that paralyse the muscles so that they stay in place. More old fashioned treatments are the regular practise of those good old pelvic floor exercises to keep the muscles firmly under control.
