Body Talk - 8th June2010

My guest this week was Mr Bhik Kotecha, one of the consultant Ear Nose and Throat surgeons at Spire Hartswood Hospital. Mr Kotecha specialises in helping patients with snoring problems and sleep apnoea, which is a condition where patients intermittently stop breathing when asleep.

There are many causes of snoring. One of the reasons can be obesity, so good advice is to lose weight and that could be a big help. Another culprit is alcohol. The main problem is that the muscles of the throat become too relaxed when asleep. It can also be relieved by turning the snorer on their side. Either that or stitch some golf balls into the back of their pyjamas so it is impossible to sleep on the back!

If all of these fail to help, then it could be time to seek professional advice. It may be caused by something more serious such as a growth in the nasal passages, for instance. Another reason to seek advice is if the snorer stops breathing for short periods of time. If this happens it can cause extreme tiredness during the day and could lead to possible heart problems or diabetes. This is due to lack of oxygen in the body.

It isn't just men that suffer, it's women too. So never worry about seeking your gp's help.

Spire Hartswood is putting on two open evenings to give people the opportunity to find out more about treatments for snoring and sleep apnoea. On Thursday 24th June and Tuesday 29th June Mr Kotecha will be giving a presentation, followed by a question and answer sesion. ENT specialist nurse Tricia Wilson will also be there, along with one of Bhik's patients who has had succesful treatment. It's free but you do need to book. Contact Spire Hartswood Hospital direct.
