Body Talk - 22nd June2010

Tonight I had two guests. Louise Ransom, who is one of the physiotherapists at Spire Hartswood Hospital, and Brian Harding, Chairman of Thrift Green Trotters Running Club who are putting on the 10k run next month.

Louise came into the studio with the new gait scanner from Spire Hartswood. unfortunately we couldn't all be tested because it needs to be linked to a computer, but it is essentially a very simple looking piece of equipment that can give a huge amount of detail about the way we walk. It looks a bit like a dance mat. The idea is to walk or run across it and it can tell where how you position your feet which can identify possible foot, ankle, hip or even spine problems. It picked up that Louise has a slightly weaker side and that could affect her knee. When Brian tried it, it picked up that he had very high arches. Both of these issues can be corrected by wearing good shoes or trainers to support the feet.

Prevention is better than cure. 25% of the bones in our body are in the feet, yet most of us don't bother to look after our feet properly. We did touch on this subject a few weeks ago when Mr Taba came on the show. Footwear is so important. It is better to have a small heel giving some support, than nothing at all, because of the way the feet havve to grip to keep the shoe on. So pumps and flip flops are definately out. Make sure your feet are protected with proper cushioned support.

Brian told us about the Thrift Green Trotters, who raise a lot of money for charity. Their next event is taking place at Herongate on 18th July. It is open to people of all ages, but make sure you have a bit of training before the event. They have weekly meetings at the Brentwood Centre, it's a great group to join to get fit and to liven up your social life! To take part in the 10k run or to join the Trotters either contact Spire Hartswood who are one of the sponsors, or look them up on the internet. It will be a great day out, and I'll keep you informed of the outcome.
