Body Talk 20th July

Tonight's guest was Mr Aman Bhargava, one of the consultant surgeons at Spire Hartswood Hospital. He talked about some of the latest treatments for bowel cancer, which is the third most common cancer in the UK.

He specialises in keyhole surgery, which has huge benefits for the patient. Patients can be in and out of hospital relatively quickly, as only the troubled area is worked on, and it doesn't leave huge scars.

Bowel cancer affects 35,000 new sufferers each year. Symptoms to look out for are constipation, tiredness and irrritability. Now we  can all suffer from these symptoms from time to time, there is only cause for alarm if the symptoms are continual. Do go to your local gp to get checked out if you are in any doubt.

Spire Hartswood have a new CT scanner and CT colonography, which is able to diagnose this condition easily and with the least discomfort to the patient.

Survival rates are improving for this type of cancer, the diagnosis and treatment has improved much over recent years. There is now a national screening programme for bowel cancer, which is very simply a postal service where the patient sends a tiny sample off to be analysed. If you haven't already had information on this do contact your local gp or Spire Hartswood who will be happy to help.

As usual, the very good advice from our consultant this evening was to eat as healthily as possible and take some form of exercise. A healthy body helps to stave off illnes, and if you are diagnosed with any kind of illness your body will be much better equipped to fight it.
