70's Rock Show – 31st August 2010

For the mathematical amongst you, here’s an equation worth remembering: The 70’s Rock Show = More great music than you can shake a stick at, guaranteed :-)

The first part of the show was all Beatles, with Paul McCartney, George Harrison, John Lennon & Ringo Starr all individually (with a guest appearance or two), then together with the marvellous “Across The Universe” & finally a cover of “Here Comes The Sun” from Steve Harley...

We had a trio of songs in a prog rock suite; some ELP, Camel & ELO, whose “Tightrope” was the first track from their album “A New World Record”. Other first tracks played on the show this week were David Essex (from his first album), Fairport Convention (from their fifth), Chicago (from their tenth) & Deep Purple (from their ninth)…

Some other numbers: Stevie Nicks took TEN minutes to write “Rhiannon”, “All Around My Hat” was actually TWO songs put together (with “Farewell He”), “Travellin’ Band” was a US number TWO & the 2nd of THREE double-sided singles released from “Cosmo’s Factory”, Smiley Lewis had a US number TWO hit with the original “I Hear You Knocking” in 1955, but Dave Edmunds took it to number ONE for Xmas in the UK in 1970, while the Alice Cooper album “Muscle Of Love” was less than FORTY minutes long...

We had hard rock from Black Sabbath, AC/DC & Kiss, beautiful songs from Kate Bush, Nick Drake, Bob Dylan & Eric Clapton, plus songs featured in films from Marianne Faithful (“Thelma & Louise”), The Flying Lizards (“The Wedding Singer” & “Charlie’s Angels”) & The Doors (“Forrest Gump”) & a few odd tracks thrown in for fun…

Next week is a “Number Ones” special, where every track will be an as yet unplayed on this show top-seller, whether it be a UK single, US single, or album track. This will take us over the 600 tracks-played-so-far-without-repeats mark, but that’s about to change. Over the coming weeks we’ll have a special show playing all the show-openers so far, then a series of THREE shows playing the best stuff we’ve played in the last six months, which will be followed by a couple of shows where we’ll play 70’s rock songs that are featured in the “Guitar Hero” games…
