Feelgood Saturday 4th September 2010

This week I had a chat with Cherry Mitchell, Manager of the Animal Rescue Charity, who were promoting themselves in Brentwood High Street. ARC describe themselves as “a safe haven for neglected and unwanted animals”, and Cherry explained that, whilst they mostly take in domestic pets, they don’t turn any animals away. They’re based in Bishop’s Stortford but serve all the surrounding counties, and she said that they’ve always found Brentwood to be very generous when they’ve been street collecting! Cherry said they have a lot of pets looking for good homes at the moment – particularly kittens and rabbits – and also that they welcome volunteers, not only to help care for the animals but also with things like building and maintenance. They always welcome visitors, although like people to phone first, on 01279 501547. They have an excellent website at http://www.animalrescuecharity.org.uk/.

It was the first day of the new rugby season, and I chatted with Kevin Meadows and his son Jack, from Brentwood Rugby Club, about their open day on Sunday. Kevin’s the Club’s Mini/Midi Chairman, and described how rugby is a great game for bringing the whole family together – they have players as young as three and a half! The Open Day was aimed particularly at children between 6 and 12, but Kevin was keen to encourage parents to get involved too, as he had done. Jack said that the Club had a great 2009-10 season but was confident that they can do even better in 2010-11! This year is Brentwood Rugby Club’s 75th anniversary, and Kevin said they have a lot of celebrations planned. Their website is at http://www.brentwoodrugbyclub.co.uk/.

The Stuck in a moment quiz was a brief clip from an iconic hit from 1991; my clue was that it was by a solo artist whose father was in the 60s band The Tremeloes – probably not very helpful unless you’re really into trivia! *

My cryptic Where am I? clue to a location somewhere in our area was that “John might have gone up it,” and I explained that the John was well known if you were watching children’s TV in the 70s. Thanks to my brother, Clive, for this!*

*The answer to Stuck in a moment was The one and only by Chesney Hawkes. Where am I? was Noak Hill, or alternatively Noak Hill Road, the John being Blue Peter's Noakes - get down Shep!
