Body Talk 16th August

Tonight's guest was Jo Eastman. , a specialist sonographer at Spir Hartswood Hospital. Jo carries out ultrasound scans for patients referred by local GP's and by the consultants at Spire Hartswood. She talked about the role of ultrasound in gynaecology and in detecting potentially life threatening aotic aneurysms in men and women.

The first contact that many of us women have with ultrasound is during pregnancy. It is used to look at the development of the baby and to detect any abnormalities. Unfortunately it still isn't accurate enough to determine the sex of the baby, unless it is sitting in exactly the right position at the time of the scan. I remember the days when you used to be given a very old-fashioned photo that you could just about make out the shape of the baby. Now you get a really hi-tech cd with the images on.

Jo's other specialist interest is abdominal aortic aneurysm. There is a national screening programme available for older men and women , so if you feel you are at risk you could get a referral from your local GP and pop along to Spire Hartswood. The signs aren't easy to spot, but if you know of someone in your family who has had this condition then it may be just as well to get checked out.
