70's Rock Show - 14th September 2010

This week was the second of seven specials to celebrate the six-month anniversary of the show & it was all about "firsts" - the tracks that have opened each of the shows so far...

Having said that, we opened with a song new to the show, Roxy Music's excellent "Love Is The Drug" - well, we couldn't have a record as first track twice! Whilst that song started life as an instrumental, Van Halen's "Eruption" stayed as an instrumental, although it’s usually used as a lead-in for "You Really Got Me". One of the great hard rock intros must be "Woman From Tokyo", after which we had a couple of rock anthems from Mott The Hoople & Argent...

Meatloaf & Tim Curry (The Rocky Horror Show) brought some flamboyance & drama to the proceedings & that was a lot of fun, but we got back to some serious rock with the outstanding The Who (with their theme to CSI: Miami) & the first of three ELO tracks on the show, "Ma-Ma-Ma Belle" featuring Marc Bolan. "All Right Now" is a true rock classic & is well on the way to notching up 3m radio plays - happy to help! Sweet performed a live version of that song with Richie Blackmore to mark the death of Paul Kossof, but we played their "Hell-Raiser", with yet another great intro…

I offered up a quiz: Could anyone guess the link between "Living In The Past" (Jethro Tull), "The Eve Of The War" (Jeff Wayne) & "Venus & Mars/Rock Show" (Wings)? The slightly obscure answer was 'Mars' - perhaps an obvious link between the last two, but the first song is in the 5/4 time signature, just like "Mars" by Holst (not to mention "Happiness Is A Warm Gun" by The Beatles, "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck, "Sound Chaser" by Yes amongst others)…

The Motors were "Dancing The Night Away" while the marvellously inventive 10cc did "The Wall Street Shuffle" & the jolly Terry Dactyl & The Dinosaurs did the "Seaside Shuffle", which reminded us of summer, as did "Beach Baby" by First Class. John Miles took all of 30 minutes to write the epic "Music" (a #1 in Switzerland) & it was half an hour well spent for sure. A classic from Freddie & the rest of Queen, a pair of ELO hits ("Livin' Thing" was a #1 in South Africa), The Hollies with the quirky & very catchy "Curly Billy" & from just last week, Steve Miller with UK & US #1 "The Joker" brought the show to a close…

More special shows coming up include a THREE-part "Best Of" retrospective & in October a TWO-part special of music featured in the "Guitar Hero" games. It's going to be rock all the way in the coming weeks, so please listen in if you can...
