70's Rock Show – 21st September 2010

The suggestion was that in order to listen to this show you need to hold tight to something bolted to the ground, in order to avoid being completely blown away by the great music! It was the first of three “best of” specials to mark six months of shows – numbers two & three are coming up in the next fortnight…

A couple of questions kicked off the show: “Who Are You?” asked The Who & The Moody Blues brought us the classic “Question”. Manfred Mann’s Earth Band brought us joy, Free sang about Jake & The Faces sang about Cindy (Rod Stewart turning up another couple of times on the show). As for answers, Joybringer is based on the classical piece “Jupiter” by Gustav Holtz & we had a few facts about the biggest planet in our solar system – which followed on from last week when we looked at Mars…

Although every track was truly awesome, Joe Walsh stands out as one of the highlights of the evening & it was followed by an exclusive mashing together of five songs (Supertramp, Pink Floyd, Python Lee Jackson [with Rod Stewart], Golden Earring & 10cc). Next month I’ll bring you a two-part special showcasing tracks featured in the “Guitar Hero” games, but offerings tonight from Foreigner & Yes will be featured in the forthcoming “Rock Band 3”. Do listen in on those shows…

Glam rock time brought Status Quo (never too glittery), Slade, T. Rex, Mott The Hoople, Bowie, Elton & Queen, with a touch of Rod [on his own] thrown in for good measure. “Hot Legs” has since been covered by such artists as Tom Jones & Tina Turner, but I’ll leave it to you to decide who has the hottest legs…

Steely Dan (featuring brilliant guitar from Larry Carlton), Ringo (featuring co-writer George Harrison on guitar) & Genesis were the bookends to a bunch of classic heavy rock tracks. We heard from Deep Purple (“Strange Kind Of Woman” was originally called “Prostitute”), Led Zeppelin (from their cleverly titled 3rd album “Led Zep III”), Black Sabbath (from their, also cleverly titled, 4th album “Volume 4”) & Thin Lizzy (with “Jailbreak”, from “Jailbreak”). What’s in a name…

Next week is also a “Best Of” special & I guarantee two more hours of superb stuff. Join me if you can…
