Body Talk - 12th June

Tonight's guest was local dentist, John Cuddigan. Did you know it was National Smile Month?

John had lots of tips for us on how to keep your teeth bright and your smile confident. Did you know that you should be brushing your teeth twice a day, morning and evening, for at least two minutes. Try telling your children that, it seems like an eternity!  Try making it more fun with an electric toothbrush. They really do clean more thoroughly, they can remove significantly more plaque.

How many of us have got toothbrushes that have seen better days? You should change your brush about every three months. Remember to floss every day as well.

As we all probably know, one of the main reasons for tooth decay is too much sugar, so , if you can, go for a healthier snack such as fruit or raw vegetables. Better for your health and much better for your teeth.

John told us that the most common reason for people visiting the dentist is toothache. What causes the toothache is where it starts to get complicated. It may just be decay, or it could be due to diseased gums or jaw problems. An experienced dentist like John should be able to diagnose the problem and tell you what you need to do to either heal the condition or to avoid it happening again in the future.

Another useful tip John gave us was for injuries to teeth. If a tooth is broken or knocked out , keep it in milk and take it along with you to your dentist. He may be able to put the original tooth back in. Don't wash it though, the bacteria on the tooth need to be there to keep it in good shape.

If you have a toothy problem that you'd like to ask about, let me know, and I'll pass your questions on to John.
