In The Mix - 21st August 2010

Simon Astell

Essex Born Simon Astell as two jobs under his belt, comedian and presenter but now he has another one to add, actor. He stars in the new BBC2 program called ‘Granma’s house’. He plays himself and the Sitcom is based on a television presenter who is searching for something more meaningful to do with his life
Simon’s first rise to fame was when he presented popworld between 2000 and 2006 and until 2009 he also presented nevermind the buzzcocks, after appearing twice as a contestant of the show in 2003 and 2005.

He has performed as a comedian at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe every August between 2005–2007 and in 2009. His entire run at the festival in 2009 which was held at the Bongo Club sold out.
Granma’s house isn’t the first program Simon has done based on true events. In June 2007, Simon co-wrote Imagine... A Mildly Amusing Panel Show, a spoof version of Alan Yentob' (who is an executive at the BBC) arts programme Imagine. Alan Yentob and Simon Amstell play themselves in a mock interview between clips of Simon's episodes of Never Mind The Buzzcocks.

Simon Amstell’s Granma’s house is on Monday night at 10pm on bbc2 and there are six episodes in the series so keep a look out for them.

Glamour poll-sexist men

A recent poll on has proven the obvious, that vampires are very popular with the girls at the moment. Robert Pattinson who plays vampire Edward Cullen in the Twilight franchise, takes first place as number one in the poll of 50 sexiest men 2010, in which over 50,000 people voted!

His co-star Taylor Lautner who plays Jacob follows him in 2nd place. Seems like there are more people in Team Edward than Team Jacob at the moment.

Xavier Samuel who plays Riley and Kellan Lutz who plays Emmet also came in the top five as did Ian Somerhalder who stars in the TV series The Vampire Diaries as . Damon. The blood sucking hotties have knocked some of the best well known, good looking guys out of the top ten.

Johnny Depp has fallen from second to sixth place, David Beckham from fourth to 21st, Brad Pitt from fifth to 33rd and George Clooney from seventh to 35th!

Other stars who have beaten them are also singer Justin Bieber and actors Gerard Butler and Channing Tatum. acting editor Charlotte Duck said: "Women are attracted to vampires because of the element of danger that comes with them. They are the ultimate bad boy - and women want to tame the beast within."

V Festival

It is the V festival weekend right now in Hylands and Weston park and what an amazing line up there is!
Just some of these acts are local singer Pixie Lott, Kings of Leon, Sugababes, The Prodigy, Sterophnics, David Guetta, kasabian, scouting for girls, ellie golding, jason derulo, Tinie Tempah, Gabrella Chilmi, goldfrapp, example, chipmunk, peter andre and eliza dolitte.

The arena will be open from 12pm until 11pm when the bands end but some bars and attractions will still be open during the night. There are 4 main stages where the action and will take place, these are main V stage, 4music, Nissan Duke Arena and Virgin Media Union.

Edinburgh Fringe festival

Another big festival happening this month which I briefly mentioned earlier is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. It started on the 6th of august and will run until the 30th. There are over 20,000 events and performances taking place over the  five weeks all ranging from prices of being free to about £35.
The latest 2010 Edinburgh Fringe will see 40,254 performances of 2,453 shows in 259 Fringe venues. Some of these venues are theatres, restaurants, high streets, churches, universities, domes, pubs, nightclubs, galleries and you can even dine in the sky, suspended at over 100ft in the Sky Restaurant seeing such views as Edinburgh castle and Princes street gardens.

Comedians such as Stephen K Amos and American Pie star Jennifer Coolidge are just two of the comic acts which will be there and Dance group flawless will also be performing. The Fringe is always filled with shows featuring the celebs and when I went last year I met quite a few in The Pleasance Courtyard, that seemed to be the place where they all liked to hang out, I saw stars such as Antony from Blue, Simon from the Inbetweeners, Al murry and Stephen K Amos.

It is a great place to be in August I would definitely recommend it, if you can get down there net year, and if you can don’t forget to check out the Pleasance Courtyard.

Orlando Bloom is going to be a dad

A few weeks ago on the show I said Orlando Bloom was marrying model Miranda Kerr, but now news has come out that they are expecting their first child.

The actor, who was in Munich to start filming The Three Musketeers, said he was looking forward to juggling his career with life as a new parent.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star said: "I'll go home as often as possible. I'm really excited about it, it's great. She'll come out here too." Bloom married the Australian model in July after getting engaged a month earlier.

She revealed her baby news in an interview with Spanish Vogue. "Yes, I am pregnant - four months along," she said.

The couple began dating in late 2007, and Miranda has made no secret of wanting to settle down and start a family.

In an interview two years ago, she said: "My ideal situation would be to live on a farm in a solar-powered house with a hammock and a vegetable patch."
