I paid brief tribute to Norman Wisdom, who died on Monday, by playing his 1954 hit “Don’t laugh at me” – not an era or style of music you’d normally hear on Phoenix FM, but I felt that this was a great way to honour a man who was, to many, a rare national treasure.

Also I was joined by prolific local journalist and author, Sylvia Kent, and Norwegian journalist, Ørjan Nilsson, whom she was entertaining whilst he visited Brentwood to write an article on a British town with an unfortunate reputation. Ørjan had searched the internet for “the most boring town in Britain” and found that Brentwood was in several of the top results! Sylvia explained that this reputation went back to the early ‘90s when a remark by a former manager of the theatre - that he found it hard to find anything interesting about Brentwood - had made its way to several national papers. Ørjan had arrived in the town just 20 minutes before going on air and I think that, despite the gloomy weather, we’d already managed to show him that this is a myth of the greatest order, as Brentwood is anything but boring!

My clues to the Stuck in a moment quiz were that it was a hit in 2005 by a group, two of whose members have had very big solo careers, and that Monica Gibson would definitely know the answer!*

My cryptic Where am I? clue to a location somewhere in our area was “Look east to see the daily star.”*

*The answer to Stuck in a moment was Don’t Lie by Black Eyed Peas. Where am I? was the Rising Sun – either the pub at Sun Corner in Billericay, or that in Ongar Road, Brentwood.
