Last Night's Soap Box

Not much time for music last night unfortunately. I only managed two tracks (Kaiser Chiefs and, appropriately, Scissor Sisters in honour of two of our guests) because there was so much CHAT going on.

My guests were Nigel Clark from The Headquarters at Crown Street, his colleague Ben, Lynne Heath from French Quarter and Sheila and Michael Jarvis, avid Crown Street shoppers. All of them quite brilliant.

We talked about the wonderful work that Crown Street independent retailers do in promoting their shops and raising funds for charity; what the council has done/is doing for local shops; Thursday's Christmas preview evening with lots of great SINGING from our own Phoenix presenters 'Sexy voice' Michelle Ward and David Worrall. We spoke much about community and how, in a return to old fashioned values, Brentwood should be applauded for being a nice place to live and shop but that we can all do even more to get involved with shopping locally and mucking in to this 'Big Society' thing that we are hearing so much about. The Big Society has been alive and kicking in our Borough for years, particularly through medims such as Phoenix itself which, after all, is COMMUNITY RADIO.

We tool a quick look at the papers and discussed yet another 'elf and safety' scare with signs having just been put up at the Brentwood Community Hopsital to warn of 'falling acorns'. That seemed to raise a difference of opinion amongst my guests (which I always relish).

We touched on what I called the 'tacky trash' that is adorning our TV screens on Sundays and Wednesdays with the launch of The Only Way Is Essex. Ben told us in defending the show that he may (or may not) be appearing in epsode four this Wednesday. A celebrity career awaits perhaps?

Next week I am talking about the house market with expert Ross Norman carter a property expert.... It's my day job too but something I haven't yet covered on the Soap Box despite home values being a very relevant subject to many Brentwood people.
