70's Rock Show – 26th October 2010

This was the first show in quite a while that hasn’t been a “special” in one way or another, so it had to be special in different ways. With Halloween less than a week away, we stretched the ‘rock’ rules just a little bit & I had a one-man dressing-up party in the studio (any excuse!)…

What else but “Monster Mash” would be good enough for a Halloween show, even if it was a trifle tongue-in-cheek, as was the wonderful Warren Zevon & the evergreen Sir Cliff Richard, with his biggest US hit – it was more successful in the States than in the UK, reaching #6 there & #9 here…

“Werewolves” has some great & very amusing lyrics, as does Joe Walsh’s “Life’s Been Good”, which features on the soundtrack of the movie “FM” – Steely Dan performed the title track for that film, but they gave us something from “Katy Lied” tonight. With a track from “It’s Only Rock & Roll”, the Rolling Stones delivered a track clearly not rock & roll, rather their first foray into the world of disco – a taster for later…

Aerosmith did 60’s pop, with backing vocals from Mary Weiss, a Shangri-La; we had a touch of tartan rock from the ‘Rollermania’ boys & Marc Bolan, the corkscrew-haired glam rock dandy & legend, gave us a dandy of a glam rock classic…

But we mixed it up big time by playing 'boogie shuffle' rock & roll from Status Quo, some harder rock & roll from UFO & even rockabilly from Steve Gibbons & Matchbox – it was impossible to stop the feet from tapping! Then the feet moved properly to pop rock disco from John Miles, rock gospel from Sir Elton & rock dance from guitar legend Carlos Santana…

Some more fun lyrics, this time from 10cc & then a burst of energy from Steve Miller (the opening track on side two of the album “Book Of Dreams” – I miss side two’s), led us into a crescendo of prog rock to conclude the show. Almost 15 mins of extraordinary Caravan & the brilliant Traffic (sounds like a bank holiday weekend) with Jim Capaldi on lead vocals, followed by Genesis (the track that ‘won’ Phil the lead singer's ‘job’ in the band), the superb Pink Floyd & the ethereally wonderful Shawn Phillips took us all the way to midnight…

It will be another special next week, when all the tracks will be on the slower side – 70’s rock goes ‘ballad-ic’. So be ready at 10pm next Tuesday, with your radio/computer tuned to Phoenix FM & whatever else makes you feel good close by - it's the best way to finish a Tuesday, I promise…
