Click here to listen again to the interview with Reg Haynes

I was delighted to be joined by Hutton based author Reg Haynes, who’s just published not one, but two books, which he was going to be signing at Waterstones in Brentwood. This was appropriately timed to coincide with Remembrance weekend as Reg is a veteran of World War II who was injured in battle whilst on service in Italy. Reg’s book “Venturous Spirits” is the story of his very full life so far, from his birth in 1920, through the war and his subsequent years in business with his wife and the evolution through his experiences of his philosophy, described in detail in his other book. “For All Our Tomorrows” outlines Reg’s simple yet profound passion for TASKS for PEACE, acronyms for Truthfulness, Accountability, Service, Kindness, Selflessness; and People’s Ethical And Cultural Excellence – in a nutshell, the age-old ethical standpoint that every individual should “treat others as they would like to be treated themselves.” Reg explained why he believes that world peace is a possibility, the only real difficulty lying with persuading people to change the way they currently view the world and their place in it. Reg is an active member of the Brentwood Branch of the Royal British Legion, and all proceeds from his latest two books are being shared between the RBL and his former Army Regiment, the Warwickshire Yeomanry. Reg is not only a fascinating resident of our area but a gentleman in every sense of the word, and I hope to be able to welcome him to Phoenix FM again soon! http://www.asisbest.info/

It was also a real pleasure to chat with Jim Devlin, Chairman and Webmaster of the Billericay Community Archive, being launched next Saturday in Billericay Library. The Archive is a joint initiative between Essex Libraries and the Essex Record Office, with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, which aims to be a permanent record of life in Billericay and the surrounding villages in the form of an interactive website. Jim explained that the Archive is appealing to current and former residents of the area for contributions, and that they’re particularly interested in gathering together people’s memories of ordinary, everyday life from the recent or distant past, together with photos, videos and any other memorabilia. The plan is that the Archive will continue to evolve as local history continues to be made, as has already happened with similar projects in other areas. There are currently about twenty active volunteers helping to make it possible, and Jim said that they’d eagerly welcome more people to help out, particularly those with writing skills who can transcribe interviews with people and turn them into stories suitable for publication on the Archive. Jim’s enthusiasm for this fascinating concept was contagious, and I look forward to checking in from time to time for an update as it develops! http://www.billericayhistory.org.uk/

My cryptic Where am I? clue to a location somewhere in our area was the question “Are Hyde and Richmond other examples?”*

*Where am I? was Queen’s Park in Billericay, Hyde and Richmond being two of London’s Royal Parks.
