23rd November 2010

After a flirtation with a cold & with a slightly croaky voice, the 70’s Rock Show returned to normal (whatever that is) & an eccentric collection of tunes we had…

Slade’s first chart single was our first track of the night – after this their spelling went a bit awry! Jonathan Richman wrote “Roadrunner” in 1970 (before even Slade) & sang it until it was a hit in 77, while Alex Harvey took a #2 by Sir Tom from 1968 & dragged it manically into 1975. Rory Gallagher was in his mid-twenties when he recorded the excellent album “Against The Grain”, also in 1975…

A little robot dancing took place in the studio when Kraftwerk took centre stage, but they weren’t alone bringing us electronic music, as The Human League & Tubeway Army led the post-punk synth revolution…

There was a “Bungle In The Jungle” cricket match this week in 2003, where England were bowled out for a mere 88 runs by Sri Lanka, but the “Rumble In The Jungle” in 1974 was far more exciting, as Ali beat the Foreman griller to become world heavyweight champion by KO in the 8th round…

Brian Protheroe sung with jungle noises too: Brian is a reasonably successful actor as well as a singer, as is Phil Collins from Genesis & David Cassidy (who incredibly was 60 earlier this year), plus Suzi Quatro appeared in TV’s “Happy Days” with the Fonz…

Guitars strummed to sing-a-longs from The Strawbs, The Rubettes & The Eagles, while Van Morrison was very jolly, but not as jolly as ELP. Supertramp, Gerry Rafferty & Steely Dan all gave us superb laid-back rock to take us up to the beautiful final half hour…

It was beautiful indeed, with Carole King, The Hollies & Elton John (with John Lennon on backing vocals & guitar) singing beautiful songs, then harmony prevailed from BJH & CSN, The Little River Band, Nils Lofgren (from Bruce’s E-Street Band) & the very non-rock like, but lovely finale from Dan & John…

Next week will be a special show, all about food in some way or another. And it won’t be long before we have a special pre-Christmas party show (but with no Christmas songs) & a special Christmas show (with lots of Christmas songs)…
